UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA BAT HOUSES |
|
Location: North side of Museum Road, btwn. Radio Drive & Village Drive location / map / directions |
What to expect: "World’s largest occupied bat houses. The two University of Florida Bat Barns and Bat House, far right, are located on the north side of Museum Road across from Lake Alice on the UF campus. The most common species living here is the Brazilian free-tailed bat, Tadarida brasiliensis. The Southeastern bat, Myotis austroriparius, and Evening bat, Nycticeius humeralis, also live in the structures. The best seasons for observing the emergence are spring through early summer, when days are increasing in length. During this time, the bats emerge sooner after sunset while there is a longer period of twilight. To gain the best perspective of the bats’ emergence, watch the western sky over the pine trees and around the street lights on Museum Road. The shadows from the trees north of the house obscure the view of the bats’ emergence." |

ROBERT THE DOLL @ Fort East Martello Museum |
|
Location: 3501 S. Roosevelt Blvd location / map / directions |
What to expect: "Science tells us dolls are inanimate objects, but those who care for Robert the Doll and the thousands who visit him each year know better. Lights flicker. Cameras malfunction. Letters of apology arrive on a daily basis. The bizarre circumstances surrounding Robert have earned him a reputation as the most haunted doll in the world. Robert is one-of-a-kind, handmade by the Steiff Company of Germany around the turn of the century. Standing 40 inches tall and stuffed with wood wool known as excelsior, he is dressed in a sailor suit and once bore painted features not unlike those of a jester. His unusual size indicates he may have been fashioned in the image of his constant companion – a boy named Robert Eugene Otto. The doll took Robert as his name, while the boy simply went by ‘Gene’. Together they would go on to make history." |

MEDIEVAL TOURTURE MUSEUM |
|
Location: 100 St George Street location / map / directions |
What to expect: "The emotions inspired by the “Medieval Torture Collection” will transport you back in time hundreds of years to some of the most miserable moments in human history. Our exhibit is a unique presentation that combines academic research with the contradictive, emotionally repulsive draw of a time in history when torture and torment were commonplace. The “Medieval Torture Collection” reminds us just how much suffering humanity can inflict in the name of cause and justice when the right tools are placed in the hands of fanatics, madmen and tyrants. Based on historical documents and engravings, we have amassed an unprecedented collection of cruelty, re-creating the atmosphere that prevailed throughout most of the Middle Ages. For several years, a team of scientists, historians, decorators and sculptors have worked on creating a unique collection consisting of several hundred pieces filling more than 4000 square feet. Are you brave enough?" |

RAVEN'S MOON |
MAGICK SHOP |
|
Location: 115 E. Brandon Blvd. location / map / directions |
Telephone: 813-653-3544 |
What to expect: "After being in the metaphysical community for over a decade, it became obvious to us that the Tampa Bay area needed a store that was a little less for show and tell and more geared towards the everyday magickal practitioner. Raven’s Moon was born. Four best friends and soul mates set out to create a shopping experience that would meet a practitioner’s magickal needs while also providing excellent customer service when people posed questions regarding their spiritual journey. Our first shop was a tiny space in the Oldsmar Flea Market. Within a short amount of time there, we upgraded our shop space for more room and expansion. Even more quickly, we needed to expand once more and decided that Brandon, Florida, without a metaphysical store nearby, was our place to call home. We set up shop and started building a community that was fully focused on providing an assortment of magickal items of the highest quality while also building connections with others to last a lifetime. The rest is history. Come visit us Wednesday-Sunday at Raven’s Moon in Brandon, Florida, a family owned and operated magick shop equipped to meet your spiritual needs." |
